CASE STUDY : JB
Building Confidence and Creative Voice Through Lyric Writing
JB began attending We Are NOISE sessions in May 2025 through the Burnley Heights school provision. From his very first session, JB showed a strong interest in rap music and an eagerness to express himself through his own lyric writing. His first piece explored themes of family life and upbringing, demonstrating an immediate connection between creative music writing and personal storytelling.
BACKGROUND
Outside of his school provision, JB began attending evening sessions at Darwen Youth Zone, travelling from Burnley to continue developing his work in the We Are NOISE Studio. His dedication led to strong peer relationships and musical collaborations, extending his learning beyond a single setting and embedding real-world teamwork and communication skills.
BEYOND THE CLASSROOM
ACHIEVMENTS
JB’s enthusiasm and persistence resulted in tangible achievements:
Created and released original songs on SoundCloud, achieving nearly 1,000 plays within a few months.
Performed live at the Blackburn Confessional Festival in September, as one of only three young people selected to represent We Are NOISE.
His song “Road From Spain” tells his personal story — an example of how lyric writing can evolve into a meaningful form of contextual self-expression and narrative writing.
These accomplishments highlight JB’s growing confidence, independence, and ability to communicate complex emotions through creative writing — all of which are essential transferable skills.
Over the following months, JB continued to attend sessions, using every opportunity to refine his craft. His focus on lyric structure, rhythm, and narrative flow showcased significant development not only in his musical abilities, but also in English and contextual writing skills — key elements of the We Are NOISE educational approach.
Through this process, JB learned to:
Use figurative language and metaphor to convey meaning.
Develop narrative sequencing — shaping his life experiences into structured verses.
Apply editing and redrafting techniques to improve clarity and impact.
Collaborate with peers, offering and receiving constructive feedback.
His commitment and creativity earned him an AQA accreditation in Lyric Writing, with potential for progression to higher-level certifications.
