TYLER ROBERTSON - BRONZE ARTS AWARD JOURNEY
Welcome to my blog!
Hi, I’m Tyler, and this is my Arts Award journey.
Throughout this process, I’ll be exploring lyric writing, rapping, and producing my own tracks and beats. My goal is to develop my skills and grow as an artist.
VIDEO 1 - Arts Award Journey
This video explains what I will be focusing on in my Arts Award Journey. I am going focus on rapping and creating my own songs and growing as an artist, I will follow this plan to achieve this.

IMAGE 1 - MIND MAP
This first thing I did when I started my Arts Award Journey at We Are Noise was map out a plan to help reach my goals. I chatted with the tutors and we discussed what I would focus on to get the best out of the experience. I designed and filled in a mind-map on Canva.

I’ve spent time exploring the studio and the space I’ll be working in for this journey. I’ve been learning which DAW I’ll use to record and how to set up the microphones properly. This is my journey, and I know that only I can put in the work to make it happen.

During this week at We Are Noise, I spent time exploring the studio space more and familiarising myself with the equipment. I looked at setting up the microphone correctly so I can use it more independently. I also spent time in the studio finding my voice as an artist. Experimenting with effects and song styles.

EXPLORING A NEW STYLE IN THE STUDIO

To help myself develop as an Artist, I have decided to step out of my comfort zone a bit. I usually would rap when I come to We Are Noise. However, I've shown my We Are Noise tutors the country-style songs I have been listening to; the lyrics have really been speaking to me on a personal level, and I have had a go at recording one. Headin’ South. It was interesting to see how preparing to record was slightly different. I decided to get a recording of the original guitar instead of a backing track to make the cover more personal to me. I had to find new confidence when singing in the studio compared to rapping.

These are some of the album cover/ logo art i have made to represent me as an Artist. We did some photos in the studio but I think a colourful and text is more my style. This was one of my first times using Canva and it was interesting to see how creating album covers and stuff works. My tutors at We Are Noise helped guide me and support me with making my designs and ideas come to life. In the images above you can see my final designs and below you can see me planning and creating.

We were able to watch Michael’s gig in the live room at We Are Noise, it was good to see another performer sing their own music. We were able to take notes as we watched so we could ask him some questions at the end of the show.

We also did our review as a group as we all watched the performer together and we were able hear each others thoughts on the performance. The style of music that was performed wasn’t really for me it wouldn’t be something I choose to listen to, but I thought Michael was good as an Artist and what he does.

It was good to be able to speak with Michael at the end of his performance with my class mates, I asked him some questions about his performance and what its like to be a working musician. It was also helpful to do it with my class mates to see what they were thinking about during the performance.

Artist Inspiration
For this section of the Arts Award I have decided to look Bugzy Malone. I have picked him because he is one of my favourite Artists and he helped put Manny on the map. He’s real when he raps and he inspires me as an artist.

I spent time over a few weeks with my We Are Noise Tutors looking into Bugzy Malone to understand his background a bit more. I listened to some tracks and looked at article features and read about him in some websites. It was interesting to learn more about his background and see he made it big not coming from the best of beginnings.

This section of the Arts Award was good as I got to look at an artist I really like, seeing how was inspired by other artists like Dizzee Rascal and Skepta. I like how Bugzy speaks truth and that’s what I want to do when I rap. I also really like the backing tracks he uses to rap to, they inspire the ones I use when making my own music.

I have spent time with my We Are Noise tutors deciding what I will share for my Skill Share part of the Arts Award. I looked at doing microphone set up and and recording but I felt that I would be better at lyric writing. In the video below you can see me working with my tutor to build the best lesson plan to share lyric writing. This is my first time teaching someone so I had to start from basics.
