LACIE WHITELEY - BRONZE ARTS AWARD JOURNEY

Welcome to my blog!

I'm Lacie, and this is where I'm logging my journey for my Arts Award!

You can follow along here as I explore different areas of the Arts. I'm mainly focusing on singing, which is my favorite thing! I'll be working on learning how to record my vocals in a proper studio and also trying to build up my confidence when it comes to performing.

I'm excited to see how this goes, and I hope you stick around!

Exploring the Arts as a Participant

I spent some time chilling and checking out the Live Room, it's super cool! I also got some solid singing practice in. Right now, I'm writing down all the different songs I'm working on to help me decide which one I'm going to pick to record in the studio. Getting closer to making that decision!

I’ve been learning how to record music. I started by connecting my microphone to an audio interface using an XLR cable. I discovered that my mic needs 48V phantom power to turn on and that I have to set the "gain" carefully so the sound is clear and doesn't distort. In Logic Pro, I set up a new audio track and made sure the input matched my mic. It was great to finally see the sound waves on the screen and hit record!

HOW TO RECORD, A TUTORIAL

In Logic Pro, I created a new audio track and picked the right input for my microphone. I used the "I" button to hear myself and the "R" button to prepare the track. Seeing the sound waves appear on the screen for the first time was a huge milestone! Now that I can record a clean signal, I’m ready to start learning about mixing.

I spent time with my tutors exploring my singing style and creating new setlists each week to find songs that fit my tone. I have also been listening to new artists for inspiration and practicing vocal warm-ups to look after my voice. This has helped me understand my range and gain more confidence in my performance.

I spent time with my tutor creating a backing track for a song I would like to sing a cover for. Me & You (Cassie, Korma) is a song I have been practicing for a number of weeks and it has been one of my favourites to perform. I think having my own original backing track will help me when i am in the studio recording, as i can perform in my own style and not try to copy the artists.

Stepping into the studio to record my cover song was a huge deal for me, and honestly, a bit of a reality check. I’m so used to the privacy of the Live Room that having the mic right in front of me made me pretty nervous at first. I’m definitely my own worst critic and hate making mistakes, so when the first few takes didn’t go perfectly, I could feel myself getting stressed out. Luckily, I worked through it with my tutor to dial in the exact sound I was looking for. I eventually had to just take a beat, breathe, and try again and that ended up being the take I was actually proud of. It felt like a massive step forward in my journey as an artist and taught me how to handle the pressure of the booth.

COVER TRACK

This is my final mix of my cover song. I am really proud of the end results. I have also made a cover photo on Canva to make it more my own.
